What Is the Czochralski Method?
The Czochralski method, also known as crystal pulling, is a technique used to grow single crystals from a melt. Developed by Polish scientist Jan Czochralski in the early twentieth century, the method has applications in materials science, electronics and the production of certain synthetic gemstones.
The process begins by melting carefully selected raw materials in a crucible at a controlled temperature. A small seed crystal is then brought into contact with the molten material. As the seed is slowly lifted, often while rotating, the material crystallises onto it. Carefully controlling temperature and pulling speed helps the crystal grow into a larger, structured form.
The technique has been used to produce synthetic gem materials including corundum, which includes ruby and sapphire, as well as certain garnets, chrysoberyl and alexandrite. The exact material depends on the composition and conditions used during growth.
Importantly, not every crystal grown in a laboratory is the same. A synthetic gemstone has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as its natural counterpart, whereas an imitation may simply resemble a gemstone without sharing those properties. Identifying the material is therefore essential when describing a product accurately.

Why Start Buying Gemstones From £5?
Gemstone collecting can introduce you to mineral science, colour, craftsmanship, geography and the stories behind the objects you choose. At The Ashalon, selected gemstones are available from £5, making it possible to begin a collection without committing to a large purchase.
Our wider collection also includes coins from £2 and historical documents at varying prices, depending on the individual item. A coin can connect you to a country or historical period; a document can preserve an achievement or family milestone; and a gemstone can become a reminder of a particular moment in your life.
These objects are not guaranteed financial investments. Their potential as heirlooms comes from the care, context and personal significance attached to them.
